Frequently Asked Questions

  • A cooperative preschool is a school where families are active participants in the classroom and school community. Parents and caregivers support teachers by volunteering in the classroom, helping with operations, and contributing to decision-making. This creates a strong sense of community and keeps tuition more affordable.

  • Each family is expected to:

    • Volunteer in the classroom 2-3 days per month

    • Hold one parent job (such as laundry, planning social events, or board membership. Time commitment and frequency will vary with each parent job).

    • Participate in a minimum of two theme room changes per school year. (Theme room changes take place on a weekend or evening and last about 3 hours.)

    • Participate in school fundraisers. Fundraisers are important to the continued running of our school.

    • Attend mandatory Orientation and Parent Meetings.

  • Parent helpers support the teacher with activities like:

    • Art projects

    • Snack preparation

    • Reading or playing with children

    • Helping with transitions

    You’ll never be asked to lead instruction — teachers guide the classroom, and parents assist.

  • Not at all! No teaching background is required. Teachers will guide you, and many parents find volunteering to be one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

  • We use positive guidance strategies, including:

    • Clear expectations

    • Redirection

    • Helping children name and manage emotions

    • Encouraging problem-solving

    We partner closely with families to support consistent approaches between home and school.

  • Snacks are provided by Teacher Elizabeth daily and it is generally a seasonal fruit and a cracker (Ritz, Graham cracker etc). We accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions. We do not allow any outside snacks from home.

  • Children should bring:

    • A labeled water bottle

    • A change of clothes and indoor shoes or slippers

    • Weather-appropriate outerwear for the playground.

    We recommend comfortable clothes that can get messy during play or art time.

  • As a cooperative, families help run the school. Parents may serve on:

    • The board of directors

    • Committees (fundraising, facilities, events, etc.)

    This shared leadership helps keep the school strong and sustainable.

  • Tuition is generally lower than traditional preschools because families contribute time and effort. Tuition details, payment schedules, and financial assistance options are shared during enrollment. We also offer scholarships. Lastly, our tuition is on a tiered scale.

  • Yes! We welcome grandparents or other trusted adults to fulfill volunteer commitments, as long as they complete required training and background checks.

  • Yes! We have frequent community events such as potlucks or seasonal events (Halloween, holiday Solstice party or a picnic) as well as Field Trips on a regular basis.
